This study investigates the effect of carbon dioxide (CO2) partial pressure on the rate of formation and the protective characteristics of iron carbonate (FeCO3) corrosion product layers on X65 carbon steel in aqueous systems. Autoclave corrosion tests were performed at 80 °C in CO2-saturated 3 wt.% sodium chloride solution at partial pressures from 5.5 to 15.5 bar. Linear polarization resistance and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy electrochemical methods were utilized to provide insight into the stages of corrosion product layer development. Analysis of the electrochemical response under each condition revealed key, distinguishable stages associated with the development of an FeCO3 layer as its role transitions from predominantly blocking steel active sites, to ultimately providing additional corrosion suppression through formation of a diffusion barrier. It was found that at higher CO2 partial pressures, the onset of diffusion control was accelerated, but the overall corrosion rate was greater than at lower pressures.

This study evaluates the gloss retention and corrosion resistance of different particle sized extender pigments via dispersion with various milling techniques. We examined high speed dispersion, planetary mixing, and media milling. Gloss retention and corrosion resistance were measured after accelerated testing methods that included cyclic salt fog with UV exposure (ASTM D5894) and EIS (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) over steel and aluminum substrates. The dispersion blends were incorporated in a solvent-borne fluoroethylene vinyl ether (FEVE) resin and evaluated against commercially obtained high performance topcoats

The Hanford Nuclear Reservation contains radioactive and chemically hazardous wastes arising mostly from weapons production, beginning with World War II and continuing through the Cold War. The wastes are stored in 177 carbon steel underground storage tanks, of which 149 are single-shell tanks (SSTs) and the remaining are double-shell tanks (DSTs). The U.S. Department of Energy, Office of River Protection is responsible for retrieving the tank wastes, treating them in order to encapsulate them in glass logs, and then permanently closing the tanks and associated facilities.

Direct current (DC) sources are a critical component of many cathodic protection (CP) systems. In order to assess the performance of these CP systems, momentary interruption of the DC current output is often utilized to help obtain true polarized potentials of protected structures1. This is achieved with a relay that is either integral to the DC current source or installed externally. Traditionally, these relays use a mechanical or mercury contactor, but solid-state relays are becoming more popular for their increased performance and reduced environmental footprint. Recent experience has indicated that interruption of current with an inductive load can damage solid state relays by momentarily exceeding their voltage rating. This has been observed by some CP technicians when they return to site to check on a previously installed interrupter, only to find it overheated and not interrupting. This study will examine the various sources of inductance in impressed current CP systems and discuss methods for mitigating the inductive effects during interruption. To demonstrate the effectiveness of these methods, an electrical circuit was created to mimic a cathodic protection circuit, and the effectiveness during interruption was measured using an oscilloscope.

Conventional diffusional heat treatments are usually performed when an increase on the surface hardness of a certain component is desired. However, some alloys, such as duplex stainless steels and nickel alloys cannot be submitted to the temperature ranges that these treatments require due to the precipitation of deleterious phases. Besides that, since these alloys are used in highly corrosive environments, the effect of those treatments on corrosion resistance is a point that deserves special attention.
This paper presents a study about the effect of two different diffusional heat treatments on the corrosion behavior of two nickel alloys (UNS N07718 and UNS N09925). The first one (HT#1) can be classified as a carburizing process, and the second (HT#2) as a nitriding process. Treated and untreated samples were analyzed through a corrosion test called critical pitting temperature (CPT) that was determined through an electrochemical method, according to ASTM G150, and by a chemical one, per ASTM G48. The results showed that the heat treatments presented opposite effects on the substrates. HT#1 improved the corrosion resistance of both substrates, although 925 HT#1 presented a lower CPT value by ASTM G48, which can be explained due to the test method aggressiveness, and HT#2 reduced their CPT. In all cases where pits were observed, they were macroscopic.

Several evaluations are conducted to study the effect of Hg deposition and fluid corrosion behaviour via Corrosion Rate (CR), solution chemical properties, surface profile and corrosion product analysis. Bubble test was carried out in glass cells and high-pressure rotating cylinder electrode (HPRCE) autoclaves test under multiple variables to study the CR behaviour.
