Currently, Ships’ Force (SF) conduct maintenance and repair painting during pier-side periods as well as while ships are underway. SF commonly use epoxy primers, such as MIL-DTL-24441, Type IV, for maintenance painting and in some cases, chloride contamination and surface profile is not adequately controlled. The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) conducted a study to verify the efficacy of replacing the current epoxy primers commonly used by SF with more “user friendly” high-build, high-solid primers.
Details of a new protocol for evaluating the effectiveness of coatings to reduce corrosion of steel structures is presented in this paper. Basic concepts of accelerated testing specified in American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) standards and recent research investigations were used to develop a procedure that can provide conclusive results within 2400 hours of exposure as compared to more than 5000 hours in current practices.

Blistering is a common failure in marine coatings that can be caused by both physical, such as osmotic pressure and temperature gradients, and electrochemical forces like cathodic or anodic polarization. This paper/presentation will start by discussing the various mechanisms that lead to coating blistering, how blisters form, and how to prevent them.

California Water Service (Cal Water) has had a team dedicated to the maintenance of its water tank infrastructure since the 1970s. The Team faces significant challenges as it strives to maintain the reliability of more than 450 water tanks throughout the State of California. Some of these challenges include tighter State regulations, increased visibility from the public, limited resources, aging infrastructure, and an aging workforce that will take their valuable institutional knowledge into retirement with them.
Traditional zinc rich primers are the primer of choice during new construction of assets placed offshore for oil & gas production. However, during maintenance, zinc rich primers are not used because of difficulties of having good surface preparation and controlling applied dft to prevent cracking. This paper will examine the performance of new, activated zinc rich epoxy primers compared to conventional zinc rich epoxy primers on steel prepared to different surface profiles using standard techniques of today.
This paper will examine the formulation and performance of new, activated zinc epoxy primers compared to conventional zinc-rich epoxy primers. We will demonstrate comparable corrosion resistance at reduced zinc levels in the dried film (Level 3 ≥65%) and show that zinc metal levels can be reduced to as low as 31% by weight without compromising galvanic corrosion protection while improving adhesion and mechanical properties of the dry film.
The authors will discuss the importance of applying and specifying coating system mock-ups and test patches for successful painting project completion and owner satisfaction. Why risk any delay during the project or owner dissatisfaction with the project after everything is finished? Overlooking and/or not requiring mock-ups and test patches on key projects and critical areas can result in problems before, during and after the project has been completed.
This paper will describe this commonplace corrosion problem associated with protective coating damage at dissimilar metal bolted connections and present a typical case history. The paper will go on to explain why slotted bolt holes are more susceptible to more aggressive corrosion damage than round bolt holes. In addition, the paper will present successful measures that can be taken to prevent this prevalent problem.
