Epoxy linings have long been the standard generic resin type when specifiers are selecting products for lining new steel potable water tanks or rehabilitating existing steel potable water storage tanks in North America. The one exception to this rule has been the Canadian potable water storage market. In Canada many specifiers have recognized the benefits offered by 100% Solids Elastomeric Polyurethane linings for 25+ years with admirable results.

The easiest way to compare abrasives is to look at the price per unit (i.e., price per ton or price per pound). If only it were that easy! Unfortunately comparing the price per unit assumes that all abrasives perform the same – and we all know that is not the case.
The County of Madison, MS. experienced severe degradation of a major pump station in their system that was less than 10 years old. They contracted with Waggoner Engineering of Jackson, MS. to design a rehabilitation system as well as increase the structural integrity with the addition of some support walls. The project created scheduling issues due to the addition of new concrete structures to the pump station. The use of innovative coatings technologies that offered the ability to apply corrosion resistant linings over green concrete structures, dramatically enhanced the project schedule and reduced overall costs.
This paper discusses an innovative technique employed on the 2017 AETC Corrosion Control Study conducted on 19 NASA wind tunnel facilities located at three NASA Centers: Langley, Ames and Glenn Research Centers. The technique adds structural and prioritization context to corrosion and coating assessments which yields an Overall Risk Priority (ORP) score for each inspection item.
Aluminum, after iron is the second -most widespread metal used on earth. Unpainted aluminum forms a protective aluminum oxide layer over the pure aluminum metal alloy and, in most atmospheric environments, is resistant to corrosion deterioration. However, pure aluminum is virtually always alloyed with other metallic elements to enhance its properties, primarily to increase its strength, but also to improve its formability, weldability, machineability, electrical conductivity, and corrosion resistance.
Those who started in the industrial painting industry back in the 1980s may remember that third-party inspectors, hired by the owner, performed all of the inspection activities and documentation. The NACE Coating Inspection Program (CIP) had just begun in the early 80s, but those getting certified did not work for a contractor. That has changed. Now contractor quality control (QC) and owner quality assurance (QA) are much more clearly defined.
Thermal Imaging, or Infrared Thermography, is an evaluation technique that has been used in the general construction industry for many years. Often times this is used to evaluate the degree of heat loss in a structure for insulation purposes, or for detecting water leaks behind a closed wall area. Some recent cases have also shown this technique applicable for testing strength of concrete structures.

Then the Contractor knows what is required however disconnect often occurs between management and field staff when meeting the specification objectives. Management want to impress the Client and submit detailed quality report forms which need to be completed by field staff however often the forms supplied are not aligned to the daily activities and are seen as not being relevant to the field staff.
Measuring physical parameters such as coating thickness, surface profile, and dew point is a common task for inspectors and applicators. However, those measurements are only as accurate as the instrument that performs them. Even high-quality electronic instruments can yield incorrect measurements.
The South Valley Sewer District, located outside of Salt Lake City, Utah, experienced severe degradation of the concrete substrate the Membrane Basins at the Jordan Basin WRF. The Bowen Collins & Associates designed facility initially opened for service in July of 2012. By 2017 the facility was showing significant effects of concrete deterioration from chemical attack, caused by citric acid and sodium hypochlorite used as a part of the cleaning procedures in the membrane basins.
Common methods of maintenance painting either involve complete removal of existing paint (SSPC-SP 10) or localized preparation using power tools (SSPC-SP 3). Sometimes an intermediate level of surface preparation may be performed by allowing intact tightly adherent coating to remain. Abrasive blasting may be used to prepare either localized areas, or to partially prepare the entire surface, allowing well-adhered aged coating to remain.
