The program focuses on aiding an engineer, contractor, or decision maker in selecting the most appropriate type of traffic bearing coating system for a given application for parking structures. The program reviews the various type of traffic bearing coating systems that are offered in today’s market, the pros and cons of each and how the parking structure construction type (precast, cast in place, etc.) may affect performance of these systems.

Tralopyril was developed as a marine antifouling agent for use in antifouling coatings. The compound has been registered with the US EPA since 2007. Since then, a range of marine coatings have been developed utilizing tralopyril for control of barnacles and other invertebrate animal fouling organisms, frequently, but not exclusively, in combination with a soft fouling control agent.
Oxygen diffusivity Dox is a key parameter in modeling corrosion rate of steel in concrete. Measuring Dox can be a complicated and slow process in conditions or geometries not always representative of those encountered by rebar in concrete. A method is introduced that eliminates someof those difficulties by using transient cathodic current measurements in reinforced concrete specimenssubject to alternating air/nitrogen mixtures. Experimental examples and modeling simulations are presented.
Combinatorial chemistry is a laboratory technique in which millions of molecular constructions can be synthesized and tested as candidates for new drugs, new catalysts, shorter manufacturing process, or novel molecules for specific targets. Combinatorial chemistry was invented for drug discovery in pharmaceutical industry in early 1980s. This was the concept that was at the forefront at the search of procedures that were expected to accelerate and facilitate new molecules for various targets such as new drug discoveries, or new molecules for any intended target.
Under current energy-market conditions, the nuclear industry must innovate and move towards a more economically viable approach for many operations and maintenance (O&M) activities. One O&M change can include minimizing labor involved and frequency of O&M activities, including shifting some manual tests to automated online testing. Changing test practices must not only consider costs but also risks and efficacy of new test approaches compared to current practice.
As the world is recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, the building and construction industry started to lead the path towards the new normal. While previously construction was a fairly straight forward experience, the world post COVID-19 has proven itself not to be the same anymore. One of the clear differences between the world pre and post COVID-19 was the concern regarding sustainability and CO2 emissions.
Translational science itself is not a new scientific process. Since investigative science experiments were established and results measured, basic and applied science has been translated into useful applications. However, science has not always been investigative or effectively translated into useful applications. And when it has, the translation often consumed a significant amount of time and faced considerable implementation obstacles.
Translational Corrosion Science, the subject of the SSPC 2015 presentation by the Department of Defense Corrosion (DoD) Prevention and Control Program, is a science-based process to accelerate the development and application of high-quality solutions to difficult material degradation problems, and to do so more economically. DoD has launched the translational corrosion science program, assisted by the National Defense University and Potomac Institute for Policy Studies, to fully develop the process concept and to implement the approach.
Transmission Tower and Pole Painting can be a challenge for the owner, their inspection staff, and the contractor. Transmission Structure painting also requires a specialized skill set which leads to worker safety, protection of owner’s equipment, surface preparation options, material selection, quality control / quality assurance documentation and the cost effectiveness of the project.
Changing conditions in the Oil and Gas industry are yielding greater corrosion protection challenges to the owners and operators of refineries, terminals, pipelines, railcars etc. Internal lining schemes which have traditionally been used for the storage and transport of crude oil and refined fuels may no longer be appropriate. The aggressive nature of crude oil (higher temperatures and more sour nature), high purity refined products and the increased use of biofuels globally necessitate the demand for better linings and more certain test results.
Historically, the Bureau of Reclamation observed coating service lives of 50 to 80 years when lining its water conveyance structures with coal tar enamel. Changes to regulations have largely eliminated coal tar enamel as a field coating option, and existing coal tar enamel is beginning to show signs of degradation or has already been repaired or recoated. Reclamation has been working to find an appropriate alternative to coal tar enamel.
Through the course of any project, communication is the key element for success. In the coatings industry, a lack of communication by project stakeholders can show up in a very short time following project completion. This can be in the form of premature failures, shorter equipment service life, etc. We have found that this gap in communication often exists on the planning and implementation side of wastewater treatment projects. As professionals we have a tendency to hear, but not listen.
