Tralopyril Antifouling Agent

Tralopyril was developed as a marine antifouling agent for use in antifouling coatings. The compound has been registered with the US EPA since 2007. Since then, a range of marine coatings have been developed utilizing tralopyril for control of barnacles and other invertebrate animal fouling organisms, frequently, but not exclusively, in combination with a soft fouling control agent.

Since then, a range of marine coatings have been developed utilizing tralopyril for control of barnacles and other invertebrate animal fouling organisms, frequently, but not exclusively, in combination with a soft fouling control agent. Tralopyril is non-copper based and thereby offers advantages over copper-based systems, including but not limited to, reduced risk of galvanic corrosion, broad range of color options including white, improved color stability at the waterline and excellent longevity of activity based on low water solubility resulting in low leach rates. Tralopyril breaks down rapidly in sea water into degradants that are relatively non-toxic to marine life and have little propensity for bioaccumulation. Field trials indicate comparable hard fouling efficacy to copper based coatings. Regulatory approvals have been granted or are pending in key countries.
