When chemical process systems require extremely harsh or demanding environments, material selection is critical for providing longevity and preventing downtime. For systems utilizing exceedingly low or high pH chemicals, fluoropolymers are often an excellent choice to prevent corrosion in a system. The strong carbon-fluorine bond allows fluoropolymers to thrive in areas where other materials would be subject to failures. Strong acids are handled exceptionally well by many fluoropolymers, and certain copolymerization reactions with materials such as PVDF can provide a material that holds up to even more challenging situations. This paper will summarize the most commonly used fluoropolymers in the industry, as well as discuss applications where fluoropolymers are used. The paper will also detail why fluoropolymers can resist exceptionally aggressive chemicals, and how PVDF-HFP copolymers improve the corrosion resistance of both low and high pH environments. Case studies will also be provided.

In the United States, gas and hazardous liquid pipelines are regulated by Section 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Parts 192 and 195 respectively. It is in these regulations where guidance for the location and frequency is required to “have sufficient test stations or other contact points for electrical measurement to determine the adequacy of cathodic protection.” Historically, many operators in the United States have placed test stations at typically a 1-to-3-mile interval to demonstrate compliance with the associated regulations. A statistical analysis was performed on the annual test station data on multiple pipelines to show how meaningful this data is towards understanding the overall cathodic protection effectiveness. The priority of CP application needs to be from a corrosion prevention perspective rather than one driven strictly by regulatory compliance.

Two of the most common acid gases produced by the refining industry are chloride compounds such as hydrogen chloride (HCl) and chlorine (Cl2). These compounds can react with water to form solutions of hypochlorous and hydrochloric acid.  Droplets that condense are often highly concentrated, and acid concentrations in excess of 10% can be expected.1 A common source of these gaseous compounds is the overhead exhaust/vent of regeneration tower within a Continuous Catalytic Reforming (CCR) unit. Chloride compounds in the regenerator vent gas are absorbed in 1 wt.% caustic (NaOH) by subsequent contact in a venturi scrubber (ejector), before venting chloride free gas to atmosphere through a wash tower.

A 9-5/8 inch (244.8 mm) Tubing Retrievable Safety Valve (TRSV), which is a type of Sub Surface Safety Valve (SSSV) governed by API Specification 14A, was found to have failed when retrieved during workover operations in a gas production well in June 2019. This TRSV was installed in the well in November 2013 and was in production service from 2015 until November 2018 when the well was shut in for maintenance of surface equipment. In March 2019, with the well still shut in for maintenance, a rapid increase in the tubing-casing annulus (TCA) pressure was observed.
