The current paper presents a study on corrosivity of produced water and make-up water on UNS G10180 carbon steel in simulated in-situ thermal operations.
This study was conducted for Materials and Reliability in Oil Sands (MARIOS), a consortium consisting of forty one (41) oil sands operators and suppliers. The goal of the study is to establish operating envelopes taking into consideration the environmental conditions present in oil sands water treatment systems, and provide material design guidelines through review of current technologies, practices and operators experiences. It is anticipated that the corrosion assessment results will lead to a design of corrosion control strategies for Canadian thermal oil sands WTS. A study on the corrosivity of field produced water obtained from in-situ oil sands operators to UNS G10180 carbon steel. Rotating cylinder electrode (RCE) and rotating cage autoclave (RCA) systems were used as test methods. The susceptibility of the carbon steel to pitting was also evaluated.
