Corrosion under insulation (CUI) is a widespread corrosion phenomenon in many industries since it was first described in 1965. CUI generally occurs when moisture is retained within thermal insulation and metal interface and when the protective coating breaks down. Improper installation and eventual damage to metal jacketing act as an entry point for water. Effects of Environmental Exposure on Mechanical and Barrier Properties of an Aircraft Coating System

Laboratory and outdoor exposure testing can be used to provide controlled or well-characterized environments for understanding how environmental factors alter coating system properties that can be used to understand systems employed on aircraft. Accurate determination of the state of the coating system would help eliminate unnecessary paint removal operations and thereby reduce worker exposure to, and costs associated with, hazardous materials handling arising from paint removal and repainting operations. A commercial aircraft coating system was exposed to laboratory environmental stressors and outdoor exposure on an atmospheric exposure rack to mimic in-service environments. Equivalent circuit parameter values of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) data were linked to mechanisms affecting the deterioration of the coating system in response to in-service environmental exposures. Laboratory and outdoor fatigue testing of the coating system and primer coating resulted in cracking of the coating layers. These cracks allowed faster ingress of electrolyte, as seen in EIS measurements, which would shorten the lifespan of the coatings. Area scans using a scanning Kelvin probe instrument were consistent with the EIS interpretation of fatigue degrading the coating barrier properties, while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed an increased linear density of pretreatment cracks in the fatigued coating samples.

All steel structures need periodic maintenance. During maintenance of the corrosion protection of such structures dry abrasive blasting has traditionally been standard practice. Over the years it has become more and more common to use water jetting for this purpose. Water jetting leaves a clean surface, free of old coating, loose particles, salt and contamination. Although water jetting produces no additional surface profile, the profile of the substrate during the new build stage is renewed. One downside of water jetting is the formation of flash rust. The degree of flash rust increases with various parameters such as temperature, relative humidity and soluble salt contamination. Furthermore, after water jetting the surface may be moist or damp, and to ensure a fast return to service the maintenance coating needs to be water tolerant. This paper presents a newly developed epoxy primer tailormade for moist and flash rusted surfaces.

Horizontal directional drills (HDD) have become an essential pipeline construction tool for crossing spans of the right of way with obstructions such as wetlands, rivers and streams, railroads, roads, businesses, and high consequence areas (HCA). This trenchless technology allows a pipeline to be installed without open cutting the ground.
