During drilling operations, the components in the drill string including the bottom hole assembly (BHA) remains in permanent contact with the drilling fluid. Therefore, besides non-magnetic properties and high strength the corrosion resistance of the materials utilized for the BHA plays a decisive role specially in applications involving harsh environments. In fact, strain-hardened CrMn-austenitic steels commonly used in directional drilling technology show a high susceptibility to pitting corrosion and environmentally assisted cracking in drilling fluids with a high chloride (Cl-) content at elevated temperatures.

Extremely corrosive environments of today’s oil and gas exploration requires more expensive Corrosion Resistant Alloys (CRAs) to be used for equipment such as tubulars. Material selection for oil and gas wells, especially those containing high hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and carbon dioxide (CO2) partial pressure, is very crucial. Wastewater coming from both municipal and industrial activities present corrosive properties toward metals and can in certain cases exceed the tolerances of the most often used stainless steels such as 304L and 316L, thus resulting in the need of superior alloys. The main factors influencing the corrosiveness of the fluids in wastewater treatment plants are high concentration of halides (more specifically chlorides), H₂S, low pH, temperature and their combined action. Corrosiveness of incoming fluids at a municipal wastewater treatment finds its roots in the municipal collection network.

Corrosion is common, costly and a prevalent industrial problem in the oil and gas industry. Corrosion inhibitors, which are surfactant-like molecules, adsorb on the metallic surface of a pipe to form a barrier film that inhibits interactions of the pipe surface with corrosive species. Despite the prominence of surfactants as corrosion inhibitors, their adsorption behavior inside a pipeline is not well understood. In this study, continuous corrosion inhibitors were evaluated to correlate corrosion performance testing with contact angle and surface tension studies. Contact angle method was employed in corrosion inhibition studies for surface characterization. Surface tension method was used to determine critical micelle concentration. Contact angle results showed that for the water-soluble continuous corrosion inhibitors such as quaternary ammonium and imidazoline, a monolayer and bilayer were formed on the metal surface as reflected by an increase and then decrease in contact angle. The bilayer further increased the corrosion inhibition efficiency until the critical micelle concentration (CMC) was reached for quaternary ammonium and imidazoline only. However, the mixed quaternary ammonium and imidazoline in the formulation resulted in the maximum contact angle value being at its CMC indicating a compact monolayer formation. The results can provide a helpful guideline for further studying the synergistic effect of corrosion inhibitor mixtures.

Powder coating extrusion requires the engineer’s consideration of the raw material chemistry and how each extruder parameter affects the powder’s behavior during compounding. Prior investigations reviewed how changes in extrusion parameters and conditions can affect the coating’s aesthetics and performance. New details in powder coating extrusion processing conditions and formulation chemistry allow the engineer to achieve specific coating characteristics. This study will be an update on the recent developments of long-term weathering exposure of high-performance powder coating topcoats on metallic substrates. Along with accelerated weathering (ASTM D4587), scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDX) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were employed to examine the coating’s appearance and performance. These findings will contribute to refining the industry’s knowledge to distinguish key parameters for outstanding long-term performance for topcoat systems.

VDM Alloy 699 XA (UNS N06699, EN Alloy number 2.4842) is a new alloy, which was developed for applications in the petrochemical industry under metal dusting conditions between 400°C and 800°C. Important properties of a new material are corrosion resistance, such as to metal dusting, oxidation resistance, and workability versus high temperature strength, which are essential for industrial applications. Currently, there are material solutions which demonstrate good metal dusting resistance, but may have issues with workability. In addition, there are also minimum requirements concerning creep resistance.
