For offshore platform maintenance coating operation dry grit blasting is a common practice to clean the steel surface. The offshore platform steels are in a various degree of corrosion. It is well known that dry grit blasting alone cannot remove salts completely and some residual salts remain on blasted steel surface. In offshore corrosive environment grit blasted steel surfaces will quickly become rusted within a couple of hours. It is hard to keep the desired near white metal finish for 2-4 hours until the coating spray application. There are several commercial cleaning chemicals to remove residual salts and to extend the surface cleanliness time.This paper covers the testing and comparison of some of these chemicals and impact on coating performance. The evaluation was in 2 parts:1. Compare various salt removal solutions.2. Evaluate the compatibility and impact of the best salt removal solution on coating performance.In the first part of the testing tests showed that one of the products did out-perform the other chemicals to remove residual salts and maintain a desired surface pH.The second part of testing was done since there was a concern about the compatibility of the salt removal product and coatings. Thus the best salt removal product was then further tested with various coating types applied. Three (3) atmosphere coatings and three (3) tank linings (immersion grade) were selected for the compatibility study.The conclusion was that one salt removal solution did out-perform other systems and the salt removal solution was compatibility with the various coatings and improved performance of the coating.

Piping and pipeline are considered to be 60-70% of the oil and gas industry equipment. One of the most crucial factors to complete high quality projects within planned schedules is to focus on the quality of welding activities. Furthermore, the non-skilled welder is considered as a main parameter to produce welds with imperfections beyond the acceptable limits. Welders should have the required welding skills to perform the welding activities and produce sound welds, resulting in low weld rejection. On the other hand, poor welder’s performance produces low quality welds which affect the integrity of the welds and contribute to project delay and increase costs. This paper addresses methods to qualify welders and monitor their performance throughout the project lifecycle. The paper will study ISO 9606 approval testing of welders, American Welding Society (AWS) and American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Sec IX minimum requirements to qualify and certify welders. It will also illustrate the main variables that may contribute to high welding rejection rate, that are directly associated with the welders’ qualification and performance. Moreover, it will study the method of qualifying welders for different levels to properly assign welders based on load and criticality to avoid high welding rejection rate. The study shows that welders’ skill is the main parameter to produce high quality welds. Focusing on the causes of common welding defects, then educate and train the welders on the main factors causing these welding defects, will leave an influence to prevent defect recurrence

The transition from partial pressure to fugacity in the assessment of acid gas activity (concentration) for the design of qualification testing of metals to be used in sour service according to MR0175/ISO 15156 entails a number of important consequences. This transition came about in the wake of oil and gas production moving off-shore to ever higher pressures and temperatures. It was recognized that multiplying total pressure by the mol fraction of H2S in the “gas phase” could no longer reflect the physicochemical realities with respect to the reactions between H2S and the metal surfaces. As a consequence it was proposed that the activity of H2S in the gas phase should be replaced by the activity (concentration) of H2S in the aqueous phase. This change in paradigm had already been accepted in the ISO Standard but not implemented. Nevertheless it stands to reason that the dissolved H2S is the active corrosion vector rather than the H2S in the gas phase.An unintended consequence of this shift in thinking lies in the fact that a very large number of Heritage Metals have been qualified for partial pressure criteria as specified in MR0175/ISO-15156 by the use of the Crolet Diagram i.e. as function of pH vs. pH2S. In order to overcome this difficulty it is proposed to generate an array of look-up tables preferably in electronic form to translate the experimental conditions from pH2S to cH2S. This translation has to be made as a function of the test parameters (to the extent they may be known) as well as the field parameters. In parallel the pH2S axis in the Crolet diagram will need to be changed to a cH2S axis. In this manner it will be possible to assign to existing test data corresponding field conditions or vice versa specific field conditions can be used to select the appropriate metal from existing test data.An additional outcome of this methodology will be a quantitative assessment of the excess conservatism practiced in the past.
