Impact of Specimen Geometry on Cathodic Disbondment Testing for Protective Coatings

At NACE Corrosion 2018 researchers provided a side-by-side comparison of two cathodic disbondment test methodologies: NACE TM0115 and ASTM G8. During this testing the cathodic disbondment results varied based on specimen geometry contrary to previous findings which claim independence. Researchers designed a subsequent experiment to further elucidate the results of the prior study. The approach utilized NACE TM0115 test standard and a matrix of two coating systems and five sample geometries. One test set-up evaluated the following samples in immersion: 2-inch 3-inch and 4-inch diameter pipe as well as 4-inch by 6-inch flat panels. A second test set-up utilized the attached cell method. The paper presents the results of this experiment and provides recommendations to create a more robust test method for correlating cathodic disbondment testing to the selection of coatings systems to be used in conjunction with cathodic protection.
