Impact of Pre-Corrosion on Corrosion Inhibitor Performance: Can We Protect Aged Pipelines?

Impact of pre-existing corrosion (pre-corrosion) on Corrosion Inhibitor (CI) performance was evaluated in conditions unfavorable of protective scale formation. CI protectiveness was significantly reduced after a 3-day pre-corrosion period.

Oilfield facilities are handling far more complex conditions than what was required a few decades ago. Many existing fields are being operated way over their design life and new developments are often in harsher environments. To manage safe and reliable operations in such environments industry heavily relies on corrosion inhibitors to protect from internal corrosion. These chemicals are usually qualified and optimized in laboratories to ensure their performance. The laboratory tests however are typically conducted on freshly polished or machined coupons and do not reflect the scenarios for aged pipelines which had corrosion features established over the years. In this work the impact of pre-corrosion on corrosion inhibitor performance has been investigated by corrosion testing and advanced surface analysis. Results show that the performance of corrosion inhibitors is significantly reduced after 3-day pre-corrosion due to the enrichment of cementite on the metal surface. Analysis of CI components reveals that individual active ingredients suffered different levels of performance loss due to pre-corrosion. This indicates that the formulation of corrosion inhibitors should be adjusted to mitigate the negative impact from pre-corrosion. Furthermore surface cleaning to remove cementite was able to mitigate the pre-corrosion effect and improve inhibitor effectiveness. This study suggested that a protocol to improve the inhibitor qualification for aged pipelines is required for the oil & gas industry.

Key words: Pre-corrosion, aged pipeline, corrosion inhibitor, cementite
