These processes work well and provide high fidelity data for many materials, especially steels. However, recent internal findings and disclosures from other research groups have highlighted a potential issue with using mass loss techniques to measure the damage on some aluminum alloy surfaces.

Carbon steel exposed to aqueous CO2 environments can be conducive to the formation of naturally protective corrosion products, namely iron carbonate (FeCO3). Understanding how FeCO3 develops across a range of conditions is a critical step in enabling the optimization of corrosion products as a natural form of corrosion mitigation. To date, most studies investigating FeCO3 development focus on near-neutral pH solutions conducive to fast precipitation while test pressures are generally atmospheric to simplify in situ electrochemical measurements.

This paper presents the second part of the collaborative study on the qualification of carbon steel and CRA material grades for CCS wells injection service following AMPP2023 publication C2023-18760 for CO2 injection casing. In this paper the focus is on the CRA alloy tubing for CO2 injection. The Charpy impact testing and fracture mechanics CTOD testing was performed on representative high strength 25Cr CRA alloys of 80 ksi and 125 ksi grades to provide data for validation of the BS 7910 Annex J Master curve procedure for converting Charpy impact values to fracture toughness. The study showed that BS 7910 Annex J Master curve model can be applied to high strength OCTG 25Cr CRA grades. An example case study is presented for an injection tubing showing that the API 5CRA requirements for Group 2 materials appear to be sufficient for the accidental load scenarios considered in CO2 injection well design.

Iron sulfide scales create well deliverability and integrity problems such as reduced production rates and damage to well tubulars. Chelating agents have scarcely been studied for iron-sulfide dissolution. This paper evaluates EDTA, DTPA, and HEDTA for its iron sulfide (FeS) dissolution capacity and kinetics at 300°F (149°C). 

A comparative study of the chelating agents with a low pH (3-5), moderate pH (5-9), and high pH (9-14) determined the optimum pH for the scale treatment. These tests were conducted in glass bottles and a high-temperature autoclave apparatus under anoxic conditions. Results show that the iron-sulfide dissolution increases tremendously at 300°F (149°C) when using chelating agents with a pH>5. At 300°F (149°C), the bond strength is reduced, allowing the chelating agents to remove the metal ion from the solid surface. The ranking of the chelating agents in terms of iron-sulfide scale dissolution capacity and effectiveness was DTPA>EDTA>HEDTA at all pH conditions. The role of chelating agents in iron sulfide dissolution at 300°F (149°C) has not been thoroughly investigated. There is no study that reports the optimum treatment time at that temperature. This paper investigates chelating agents and provides the optimum dissolver composition and treatment time for field operations at high temperature conditions.

The Wafra Joint Operation (WJO) Oilfield is located in the central-west part of the Kuwait-Saudi Arabia Neutral Zone. The Wafra oilfield reserves were first discovered and wells drilled in 1954. This field produces two types of crude oil, Ratawi (light oil) and Eocene (heavy oil), with average water cut of 8085%. During operation, the production wells produce the oil emulsion through mostly coated flowlines to sub-centres (SC) where the sour oil, water and gas are separated.  The facility has two gathering fields; Eocene and Ratawi. Eocene has 2 phase separation, whilst Ratawi has 3 phase separation. The sour gas is either flared or flows to the Main Power Generation Plant, whilst the oil is processed  to the Main Gathering Center (MGC). The produced waters (PW) are routed to the Pressure Maintenance Plant (PMP).

The United States Army and Marine Corps (USMC) paint their vehicles with the Chemical Agent Resistant Coating (CARC) system. This system consists of a pretreatment, an epoxy primer, and polyurethane topcoat, similar to many other industrial paint systems, but with added functional requirements (e.g., chemical agent resistance, camouflage, and signature reduction) unique to these paints. The systems that utilize these coatings are also designed for specific capabilities, of which corrosion is usually a lower priority. Lastly, the vehicles and equipment of the Army and USMC typically operate in harsh environments, which are highly corrosive.

A research and development program was undertaken to create a composite material repair system which was compatible with high concentrations of sulfuric acid up to 98%. The initial results of the program showed great promise in reaching a level of compatibility with the aggressive chemical and further testing and validation was required. The next level of testing was to include the effects of increasing temperature of the operating conditions on the compatibility of the system with 98% sulfuric acid.This testing program originated because of the demanding conditions found in most chemical processing facilities. Many requests for compatibility information between the pipe contents and the composite repair materials have been fielded from the industry with sulfuric acid in high concentrations (up to 98%) being a routine chemical in question thus the testing project was developed and completed.This paper will present the results obtained as well as insights gained throughout this research and development program in detail with regard to chemical compatibility with sulfuric acid at high concentrations and different temperature ranges evaluated.
