Drag Reducing Agents (DRA) usage in liquid petroleum pipelines has increased over the past few decades, as they improve the mechanical efficiency of flow systems, but their potential impact on different aspects affecting corrosion management has not been fully evaluated. For example: DRA may a) decrease mass transfer and velocity near-wall, reducing flow induced localized corrosion or erosion-corrosion; b) introduce changes in the oil/water interface, affecting water-in-oil stratification and water-oil phase inversion point; c) affect the function of corrosion inhibitors by adsorbing to surfaces or direct chemical interaction.

The potential effect on water accumulation was not included in the model developed for the Pipeline Research Council International, Inc (PRCI) or in other models that are typically used6 for the indirect inspection step of the Liquid Petroleum Internal Corrosion Direct Assessment methodology (LP-ICDA).

It is important to monitor the corrosion rates of steel in electrolyte environments such as aqueous solution or soil in order to evaluate the integrity of the members of facilities. As the nondestructive monitoring method polarization resistance (Rp) method is generally known. The corrosion rate icor is calculated by the equation of icor=k/Rp . Herein k is a constant decided on the specific condition of steel surface and the environment. It is not easy to decide k on each condition. As a monitoring method without deciding k has been demanded CIPE (Current Interrupted Polarizing Extrapolation) method was developed. By CIPE method the corrosion rate is calculated by the Tafel equation obtained from the polarization curve of the in situ measurement.　In this paper in order to confirm accuracy of the method the measured corrosion rates were compared with the values calculated from mass losses of steel specimens in neutral aqueous solution. As a result the actual corrosion mass losses gave good agreement with the values of coulomb amounts which were calculated from the corrosion rates monitored by CIPE. Therefore it is clear that CIPE is a useful method for real time monitoring of corrosion rate of steel in aqueous solution.

RLs are susceptible to internal corrosion that is influenced mainly by fluid corrosiveness including factors such as temperature, pH, carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) content, water chemistry, flow stagnation, wettability, and presence of deposits.

Generally, for corrosion to occur there must be liquid water with sufficient quantity to wet the pipe surface. Once water wet, the line will corrode at a rate determined by the chemistry of the water, acidity and quantity of deposits.

A Novel Method for the Enhanced Kill of Sulfate Reducing Microorganisms

Hydrogen sulfide gas produced by sulfate reducing microorganisms (SRM) creates significant challenges in the petroleum industry including corrosion concerns, product devaluation, and significant health risks. Biocides and inhibitors are often employed to control these detrimental activities. Recently, co-injection of a synergistic blend of biocides and the SRM inhibitor, nitrite, was proposed as an effective means to control biogenic sulfide production, however, the method only addressed inhibition of SRM activity and not kill. Inhibition can have the undesirable consequence of allowing SRM to resume full activity once the inhibitor is depleted, thus requiring the continuous input of expensive chemicals to maintain control. On the other hand, biocides are designed to reduce SRM concentrations thus reducing the need to add additional chemical until the SRM population re-establishes. Lab results, using an SRM field enrichment, demonstrated that the sequential injection of nitrite inhibitor followed by glutaraldehyde led to an 8-log reduction in SRM while only a 2-log reduction when co-injecting these chemicals at equivalent concentrations. It is proposed that pretreatment with the inhibitor, nitrite, or other respiratory inhibitor, results in a reduction in cellular ATP of the SRM creating a sublethal stress response allowing for their enhanced kill upon subsequent biocide addition.

Currently most cooling water treatment programs utilize phosphate for corrosion control and introduce addition of calcium phosphate scale inhibitor to reduce potential scale on heat exchangers. Non-phosphorus program would reduce or eliminate the need of calcium phosphate scale inhibitor and reduce phosphorus nutrient feed to system to control bio-growth. However existing non-phosphorus programs for cooling water treatment often suffer from poor mild steel corrosion control limited operation window and high treatment cost. Nalco Water developed a new Non-phosphorus program to solve these challenges. This novel program is a blend of proprietary scale and corrosion inhibitors. It provides excellent anodic and cathodic corrosion control of mild steel in a variety of water matrixes (from soft water to high chloride water) and it widens operation window by providing superior calcium carbonate inhibition and eliminating calcium phosphate scale. Lab and field trial studies in cooling systems were conducted in U.S. to evaluate the new Non-phosphorus program. The performance of non-phosphorus program in these studies showed outstanding corrosion and scale control.
