Thermal spray aluminum (TSA) coating provides a more durable protection and is recognized as Best in Class for corrosion under insulation (CUI) prevention. This document captures the key components required to get TSA installed by material engineering, project design and execution. These execution details apply to any TSA and insulation system installation whether it is a new construction project or in-plant maintenance project. CUI is typically a high maintenance cost item for fixed equipment in the petrochemical industry. Historically, conventional coatings were used for CUI prevention; however these coatings generally have limited life. The materials/corrosion engineer (MCE), with TSA know-how, has a crucial role to play during the deployment of TSA in new plant designs and construction. The MCE should provide guidance and support during the project's Front-End Engineering and Design stage and during the implementation of the facility's CUI prevention strategy. Equipment design details and insulation details may need changes to reduce the likelihood of water ingress into insulation and enable good surface preparation. Guidance and hands-on support by MCE, with TSA know-how, should be considered for contractors and equipment suppliers without prior experience with TSA. This work process results in a higher quality TSA implementation and on-time project completion.
