CUI is the most expensive problem in the corrosion history due to their highly corrosive conditions and the limited visual access by thermal jackets. In general CUI is caused by water leakages from the thermal jackets. Visual inspections of steel pipes and tanks by removing the thermal jackets are most reliable way to find CUI locations at present. However the cost of the inspection is so high so that only limited areas are selected. In cyclic temperature pipes the source of water is condensation so that the entire pipe and tank surfaces are subject to CUI regardless of water leakages from the outside environment. Typical high temperature coatings or thermal sprayed aluminum (TSA) have been used to control CUI. In addition some CUI monitors methods were developed in the past. The cost-effective three layered CUI protection system was developed by combining galvanic CP and barrier protection.In addition the CUI locations caused by water leakages are not predictable and the number of CUI locations is massive for most petrochemical plants and refineries. Therefore CUI warning System was developed to eliminate the locations which are not developing CUI.This paper discusses how to protect CUI using the three layered system and detect the CUI locations remotely.
