Oilfield sulfide scale formation is peculiar to sour production scenarios, and for many oil and gas fields the issue of iron sulfide scale management downhole presents a major challenge. Historically iron sulfide scaling downwell have featured ‘reactive’ chemical dissolver interventions to recover well production once sulfide scale has deposited, and operators have published extensively on their experiences i.e. coiled tubing deployed dissolver technologies used in well clean-out treatments (Green, et.al. 2014, Wang et.al. 2017, Wang et.al. 2018, Buali et. al 2014).

Application of corrosion inhibitors confer many advantages for combatting internal pipeline corrosion in the upstream oil and gas industry. It is known that the associated costs for using corrosion inhibitors are low compared to other mitigation techniques [1]. For continuous injection procedures, water-soluble inhibitors are not expected to form long-lasting films, so they must be continuously injected to maintain their effectiveness. Batch inhibitors are usually higher molecular weight species and oil soluble. They tend to be more tenacious, providing a protective barrier between the water and the metal over a long period of time.

Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) activities are mostly monitored by using canonical culture-based methods. However, these methods detect only culturable bacteria or require months of incubation to get results. To overcome this, molecular detection methods were developed for many of the MIC-causing microbes but were not available for Iron Reducing Bacteria (IRB) and Thiosulfate Reducing Bacteria (TRB). IRB and TRB are among the dominant group of microbes involved in corrosion and souring oil and gas infrastructures. In the present study, molecular probes were developed for IRB and TRB by targeting functional genes implicated in iron and thiosulfate reduction, respectively. Candidate gene sequences were retrieved from genome repository databases of pure isolates or metagenomic sequences. The sequences were aligned using bioinformatic software and primer-based probes were developed from conserved regions. Specificity and efficiency of the primers were validated by amplifying the sequences of target and non-target microbes using Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) methods. The probes successfully detected candidate microbes in biocorrosion samples collected from various gas processing facilities. The identified primer-based probes will help oil and gas industries to monitor MIC activities and develop timely management strategies to prevent undesirable microbial activities while improving system integrity and safety concerns.

Offshore metallic structures have an average life-time of 20-25 years. They consist of four different zones, the buried, the submerged, the tidal/splash and the atmospheric one. According to NACE 2013 the global corrosion cost is estimated to be US$2.5 trillion, consisting a major economic problem. Hence, protection from corrosion is essential. Each zone is protected either with cathodic methods, or with a combination of cathodic methods and coatings. More specifically, the protection of the atmospheric zone, which is the aim of this research, due to the lack of continuous electrolyte (seawater) does not allow the application of cathodic protection.

The development of combination products for scale and corrosion inhibition for fields producing at high downhole temperatures (~150C) and that generate produced waters with high Calcium concentrations can be a challenging undertaking. Traditional phosphonate scale inhibitors can be very effective; however they have been shown to form insoluble inorganic scales at high calcium concentrations that can plug and fail capillary strings. The development in this work considered the use of polymeric type scale inhibitor and a newly recently introduced high temperature corrosion inhibitor. Again because this is a high temperature application the evaluation of the corrosion performance can also be challenging due to the difficulties derived from attempting to prevent the scaling process while trying to obtain meaningful corrosion performance data. The developed combination product was stable at 150C compatible with capillary string materials and outperformed an incumbent product based on a phosphonate scale inhibitor and a more traditional type of corrosion inhibitor.
