Corrosion Resistance of Duplex Stainless Steels for CCS Application under the Liquid Phase in Equilibrium with Supercritical CO2 Containing Slight Amount of O2

In carbon dioxide capture and storage, CO2 emitted from various industries containing impurities is captured and injected underground in dense or supercritical phase through tubings. In order to evaluate corrosion resistances of materials in the supercritical CO2 with a slight amount of O2, corrosion tests were performed under the conditions of 5 mass% NaCl equilibrium with CO2, containing with the various amount of O2 at total pressure of 130 bar and 100 °C. Super Martensitic Stainless Steel (UNS S41426), Duplex Stainless Steel (UNS S82551), and Super Duplex Stainless Steel (UNS S39274) were evaluated. Localized corrosion was observed in S41426 at conditions higher than 200ppm O2 (0.026 bar O2 partial pressure) condition. On the other hand, S82551 and S39274 showed good corrosion resistance in the same condition. As for S82551, it suffered from localized corrosion at 1000ppm O2 (0.13 bar O2) condition. However, in the actual O2 concentrations, it is considered that S82551 and S39274 are suitable materials even if formation water flow back has occurred.

In Oil & Gas industries, Cr-Ni-Mo stainless steels and Ni-Cr-Mo alloys with Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) lower than 40 could be selected for Rigid Production subsea risers, pipeline, and associated structure’s piping, according to a CO2/H2S corrosion assessment that considers all steady and transient conditions foreseen to operate the reservoir.

However, there are frequently some localized corrosion concerns for these materials during the installation and pre-commissioning of the line, when the internal surface of the line could be in contact temporarily with untreated seawater. These concerns systematically lead to discard the selection of these materials and to select, for conservative purpose, UNS N06625 that is admitted immune to localized corrosion in ambient seawater in international standard and operator’s specification, whatever the outcomes of the CO2/H2 corrosion assessment.

The purpose of this paper is to study the corrosion resistance performance and requirements of AM biomedical implants as well as to characterize the corrosion behavior of Additive Manufactured 316L stainless steel in simulated physiological environment. The corrosion performance and mechanical properties of additively manufactured 316L stainless steel material in simulated physiological environment was studied. In the efforts of improving the reliability of Additive Manufactured biomedical devices, this research focuses on studying the corrosion, microstructural and mechanical properties of Additive Manufactured 316L stainless steel. It evaluates corrosion resistance through characterizing the corrosion behavior using cyclic anodic polarization tests in simulated physiological environment. In this experiment, the properties of 316L stainless steel parts manufactured using Selective Laser Melting SLM technique have been studied. Cyclic potentiodynamic polarization test indicated that additive manufactured materials had slightly lower corrosion resistance than the casted stainless steel parts of the same grade. This was evident by the difficulty of regenerating a stable and protective passive oxide layer at room temperature as well as the instability of passivation at higher temperatures. Moreover, the additive manufactured samples showed a higher yield strength than the casted samples but lower values for elongation and ultimate tensile stress.

CUI (Corrosion under insulation) is among the key damage mechanisms in the process and hydrocarbon industries which results in the localized corrosion (mainly) thereby reducing the service life of the assets (pipes, equipment, etc.) CUI is reportedly known as the reason behind 40-60% of failures in the facility piping whereas small bore piping (i.e., NPS< 4”) are even more sensitive to CUI failures, where up to 81% of reported failures in small-sized piping are known to be from CUI. Monetary spending to inspect and fix CUI-related failures cost 10% of overall maintenance budget in a typical medium-sized oil refinery. CUI risk is influenced by numerous operational and environmental factors which impedes its management in a typical AIM (Asset integrity management) program.

The corrosion severity of an environment is important for both design and maintenance of infrastructure especially in marine and costal environments. Corrosion can vary drastically depending on conditions such as temperature, humidity, salt loading, and rain events.1 The interplay between these variables is quite complex so a variety of indirect techniques for quantifying corrosion severity are typically used. One common method is the determination of corrosion rate by measuring the mass loss of steel coupons exposed in the field. Measuring the change in mass of the steel coupon as a result of the corrosion product being removed from the substrate can provide the rate of corrosion after a specific exposure time in the field.

Molten chloride salts are one of the leading candidates for heat transfer fluids and thermal energy storage for generation IV Molten Salt Reactors (MSRs). These chloride salts demonstrate many favorable properties such as low melting temperatures, high boiling points, high heat capacity, and low vapor pressure at higher temperatures. Ternary chlorides such as NaCl-KCl-MgCl2 used in this study are particularly attractive due to their lower melting points and high decomposition temperatures.

Molten salts are being considered for use in a new generation of nuclear reactors. Therefore, any materials selection process necessarily involves corrosion studies to understand the compatibility between the salts of interest and the materials of construction. This project investigated the corrosion behavior of novel Ni-base superalloys in molten chloride salt mixtures at 750°C for 200 hours in an inert atmosphere. Alloy response to the molten salt was examined through mass loss per unit area, analysis of surface phases and microstructural examination of the alloy cross-section along with elemental analysis. The role of critical alloying elements in alloy corrosion behavior was related to the material response to the molten salt. Alloy 6, an aluminum-containing alloy was the most corrosion resistant while Alloy 7, containing titanium additions, also did well. In the absence of these critical alloying elements, Alloy 4, proved to be the least corrosion resistant.
