This paper highlights a PHMSA-sponsored research directed toward enhancing pipe potential measurements in paved areas. The scope includes asphalt, concrete and gravel paving. Close interval DC pipe-to-soil potential measurements, DCVG coating evaluation procedures, and ACVG coating evaluation procedures are addressed. The 2-year research endeavor is part of a three-component evaluation to enhance the External Corrosion Direct Assessment (ECDA) process in NACE SP05-02. The other two aspects are enhancing ECDA procedures for cased pipe and severity ranking.

Keywords: Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), External Corrosion Direct Assessment (ECDA), pipe-to-soil potential, paving, asphalt, concrete, gravel
