The signals of common ECDA tools were simulated under a range of parameters to improve criteria for identification and prioritization of indications. Simulations were performed using a University of Florida model called CP3D, and parameters included pipeline diameter, depth of cover, overall coating condition, soil resistivity, level of cathodic protection, polarization resistance, and coating flaw size. Simulations included Close Interval Survey (CIS), Direct Current Voltage Gradient (DCVG), Alternating Current Voltage Gradient (ACVG) at both high and low frequencies, and Current Attenuation at high and low frequencies. Preliminary results show that the studied parameters affect ECDA signals, and that criteria taking these factors into account significantly improve the ability to accurately identify and prioritize indications.

Keywords: ECDA, direct assessment, coating flaw, soil resistivity, cathodic protection, CP3D
