Pollutants in vehicle exhaust gases could accelerate the corrosion damage to metallic engineering structures including bridges and light poles. The objective of this work  was to test whether or not corrosion sensors can be used to evaluate which vehicles emit the pollutants that cause more damage to metals. Real-time corrosion sensors were used to measure the corrosion rates of zinc and carbon steel before and during exposure to the exhaust gases from different vehicles. The changes in the corrosion rates by the exhaust gases were used to assess the exhaust gas effect on the corrosion of the metals. A small amount of water was equilibrated by each of the exhaust gases; the pH and conductivity of the water were measured and used to indicate how much acid and ion-producing species the exhaust gases contained.
