Organic coatings have been widely used to protect steels and other metals in corrosive environment due to their good physical chemical performance and low cost. Many kinds of organic coatings have been also applied to protect ship in various corrosion environments. Especially epoxy coating systems among various organic coatings have been mainly used to protect water ballast tank of ship from corrosion. Since the introduction of aquatic nuisance species via ship’s ballast water has raised detrimental ecological issues numerous water ballast treatment systems that may block inflow of aquatic species are presently being studied. However by using these treatment technologies there have been concerns that they may have some adverse effects on the performance of coating system for ship’s ballast tank. Because coating performance especially for water ballast tank is important factor to determine ship’s lifetime it is essential to evaluate coating performance in the environment exposed to the seawater treated by water ballast treatment systems. Therefore this study was performed to verify the effect of chlorinated seawater on coating performance of epoxy for ship’s water ballast tank. Two different representative epoxy systems for water ballast tank were selected and coating performance test was carried out in accordance with IMO PSPC Regulations by using the simulated wave ballast tank (SWBT) with natural seawater and chlorinated seawater environment for 6 months. Coating performances such as adhesion strength anti-corrosion resistance cathodic disbondment resistance color change were evaluated and FT-IR analysis was conducted to confirm the chemical molecular structure change caused by coating degradation.
