There are significant differences in how materials selection is performed between operators and the same operator can choose different materials solutions for different geographical areas. Several parameters can influence materials selection such as tax regime cost of maintenance experience and traditions. The main differences in materials selection between the North Sea and other regions will be presented.
Materials selection is addressed differently and the degree of involvement from the operator varies. Some operators will define the “Materials Selection Philosophy” themselves and this will often include actual material selection for the main systems such as pipelines and main process. Typical “materials specific” documents to be produced  in different project development phases are listed. Other operators leave all materials selection activities totally up to the engineering contractors and fabricators. Materials selection is often included into other disciplines such as the “Process discipline” and “Instrument discipline”. Statoil’s philosophy for Materials Selection is outlined.
ISO 21457 is the only ISO standard addressing materials selection in the upstream oil and gas industry. The expert group that developed the standard consisted of representatives from most of the major operators. Examples on how the standard can be used to fulfil company specific requirements are given. Issues that need to be specified by the end user to the manufacturer of the equipment in the scope of work are listed.
Some case examples of materials selection are shown and hot topics related to materials selection in the industry are discussed.
