Superduplex stainless steel has been used by the oil and gas industry for over twenty years because of its combination of high strength good ductility and excellent corrosion resistance in sour brines.  Geothermal applications combine many of the features of oil and gas applications with high temperatures and chloride concentrations as well as the presence of H2S.  Data is presented to show the high resistance of Z100 superduplex stainless steel to sulphide SCC in sour brines and how the limits in ISO 15156 part 3 can be extended depending on the chloride concentration and pH.  In addition to SCC there is a concern about pitting at high temperatures and data is presented to show the high resistance of superduplex stainless steel to pitting in sour brines.  During handling of hot brines on the surface it is possible for small amounts of dissolved oxygen to be sucked into the brine.  Data is presented to show the effects of low oxygen concentrations on the resistance of superduplex stainless steel to crevice corrosion.
