In order to provide sustainable corrosion resistance of casings in areas of geothermal deep wells materials designed for such applications have been evaluated regarding their suitability in a first combined project of corrosion, geology and materials scientists.

8 different materials were evaluated by exposure and electrochemical tests. 2 of those materials were carbon steels, 2 highly alloyed stainless steels, 2 Ni-based alloys and 2 based on titanium. Tests were performed in an artificial geothermal fluid, which composition based on a reference analysis of a real well.

Tests showed different corrosion behavior of the materials selected. The limitations of suitability were determined. Based on the test results recommendations for materials selection were given for applying parts made of these materials for geothermal sites. The test results, presented in this paper, will be used for designing new geothermal sites. They are functioning as a base for a future extended test program.

Keywords: stainless steel, Ni-alloy, Ti-alloy, Geothermal, Corrosion
