There have been many studies of high temperature corrosion in process streams. The corrosion phenomena and the conditions of occurrence differ according to the material involved and environmental factors that affect its behavior. However the basic mechanism of high temperature corrosion has been clarified by such investigations. Nevertheless high temperature corrosion damage in chemical equipment may differ from typical examples in other applications because the corrosion mechanism and the damage morphology are attributable to the influence of organic products in the service environment. This paper discusses the investigation and measurement of high temperature corrosion of Alloy 600 and Alloy 800 heat exchanger tubing in organic chemical processing streams.
