Solvent-free Vinyl-Ester Lining Systems for Severe Corrosion Protection

Handling, storing and processing of hazardous chemicals are important tasks not only in chemical industry globally but also in many other production facilities, e.g. automotive, energy, pharmaceutical. Different types of resistant linings are used prevent corrosion of plants and equipment, to protect against possible leakages, to prevent unforeseen downtimes and to guarantee environmental protection. Depending on the individual chemical, thermal and mechanical conditions within the local production environment different materials are used as internal linings in process or storage vessels, as floorings, as sealing layers, e.g. Epoxy Resins (EP), Polyurethane Resins (PU), Polyester Resins (UP), Polymethylmethacrylic Resins (PMMA), Furanic or Phenolic Resins (FU / PF).

Most industrial applications are dependent on save handling, processing and storage of hazardous chemicals. Epoxy- and vinyl-ester-novolac linings are state of the art to prevent severe corrosion on concrete and steel surfaces within plants, vessels or tanks and thus avoid any environmental impacts by leakages. As both systems contain volatile organic solvents, possible allergy triggers or harmful chemicals like styrene, the application process has an impact on the environment as well as on health and safety of applicators or workers.

Within this paper, we will show a new class of styrene- and solvent-free vinyl-ester-novolac-based systems suitable to build up self-leveling floorings, coatings, laminates or brick linings for different types of severe corrosion protection in different types of industry.
