The purpose of this NACE standard recommended practice is to present procedures and practices for design, installation, operation, and maintenance of deep groundbeds used for the control of external corrosion of underground or submerged metallic structures by impressed current cathodic protection.

This recommended practice should be used in conjunction with NACE Standard RP0169-83, "Control of External Corrosion on Underground or Submerged Metallic Piping Systems," and NACE Standard RP0177-83, "Mitigation of Alternating Current and Lightning Effects on Metallic Structures and Corrosion Control Systems."

This standard was prepared by NACE Task Group T-10A-7, a component of Unit Committee T-10A on Cathodic Protection, and is issued by NACE under the auspices of Group Committee T-10 on Underground Corrosion Control. Task Group T-10A-17 is composed of corrosion engineers from oil and gas transmission companies, gas distribution companies, power companies, and communications companies; corrosion, power companies, and communications companies; corrosion consultants; representatives from manufacturers; and others concerned with corrosion control of underground structures.

1.1 This recommended practice presents acceptable methods for the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of deep groundbeds that discharge impressed current for cathodic protection of underground or submerged metallic structures. The following topic headings have been used:

Section 2: Definitions

Section 3: Design

Section 4: Installation

Section 5: Operation and Maintenance
