The use of traditional corrosion inhibitors in paints and coatings continues to be challenged from both an environmental and performance aspect. End users are demanding better corrosion performance, and in many cases, this cannot be achieved with traditional zinc or chromate type inhibitors. The use of VCIs (vapor corrosion inhibitors) in coating formulations has shown that in many systems, they can replace the older technology or significantly improve the performance of the system by working in synergy with the existing inhibitors.

The “Weakest Link” on any structure is found at the nut and bolt assemblies. Nuts and bolts are found on every structure. “The fate of any complex steel assembly may be determined by the vulnerability of its smallest and least considered components”. “The bolts or fasteners holding the assembly together are often the areas where corrosion starts first and where the effects of corrosion may have the most serious consequences”.
Historically, the Bureau of Reclamation observed coating service lives of 50 to 80 years when lining its water conveyance structures with coal tar enamel. Changes to regulations have largely eliminated coal tar enamel as a field coating option, and existing coal tar enamel is beginning to show signs of degradation or has already been repaired or recoated. Reclamation has been working to find an appropriate alternative to coal tar enamel.
Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) is an important degradation mechanism for materials in civil infrastructure. Recent findings in Florida showed severe corrosion of submerged steel bridge piles associated with microbial activity. Furthermore, heavy marine growth (i.e., tunicates, hydroids, barnacles) was observed on the steel piles, which was also thought to affect the corrosion process by creating oxygen concentration cells and causing the initiation of localized corrosion.
Duplex Coating systems refers to the application of a protective coating system (liquid or powder) over hot-dipped galvanized steel. These systems are often specified and are considered very robust in a wide variety of corrosive environments.
Compliance with California's Prop 65 regulations have become even more complicated since the new Clear and Reasonable Warning labeling rules took effect on August 30, 2018.
