Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is used to evaluate the influence of a topcoat to impact corrosion protection after accelerated exposure testing (QUV, xenon arc, Prohesion). The ability to monitor early undercoat corrosion, at progressive stages of the accelerated weathering tests, was a major factor in selecting the EIS testing method.

For decades, waterproofing has been a major concern and a widely researched topic by building scientists and forensic engineers. Elastomeric coatings have been broadly used in different applications since the early 1950s. Manufacturer’s recommendations for the proper application of elastomeric coatings are often based on laboratory conditions (75oF and 50% RH) rather than extreme conditions posed by the real world. This study examines the failure of elastomeric roof coating exposed to conditions of high temperature (150°F) and water pooling caused by precipitation.
As the maritime industry continues to push forward negotiating obstacles regarding cost reduction and efficiency, many advancements have been made over the years. Robotic welding, paperless quality control and advanced coatings have all played large roles in the overall success of the primary goals. One major improvement has been the integration of non-ferrous and composite materials for construction. Lighter materials that exhibit better corrosion resistance over steel are seeing increased use in ship and platform construction. The practice of induced heat to decontaminate a tank (pre-baking) that has been in previous service for re-lining and / or the post application heat curing (force curing) of an applied lining may be considered as a lost art known currently to the few lining specialist within the industry. The objective of the presentation is to inform or remind Owners, Specifiers, Inspectors, Applicators and Vendor Representatives of the requirements and benefits of these processes to obtain a successful relining or tank lining project and additionally attain time savings and prevent cold curing issues.

Recently new instruments have been introduced into the market for measuring the profile/roughness of blasted surfaces. One of the major developments is the ability to use scanning technology to rapidly assess a surface and provide profile measurement. This paper looks at the new instruments and the potential impact they can have on the measurement of profile and the benefits to the inspector in terms of the improved efficiency available in completing an inspection.

By examining a “microcosm” one can look at how an overall system or market operates and infer assumptions and regard changes by looking at manageable data sets. This paper will examine a “microcosm” of the water tank recoat market. Data was collected from the website “Civcast USA”. The projects that were examined were water tank recoats in the Texas Market.
There have been specifications written for the use of dehumidification during surface preparation and coatings since the early nineties. These early specs keyed in on parameters that were believed to get the job done and reflected the limited knowledge and experience of a very new industry. Since then, dehumidification has become much more widely accepted and specifications exist for pipes, above ground storage tanks, ships and containments.
Corrosion is a durability concern for any unprotected structural steel from its exposure environment and coatings are widely used for corrosion protection. Zinc-rich primer-based three-coat (ZRP) systems are the most widely used for structural steel, since 1980’s. However, these coating systems often require regular maintenance. So, there is always interest to develop durable novel coating systems to reduce the maintenance cost.
