Black tar-like fouling material was driving frequent shut-downs of a gas plant. Analysis indicated that the nitrogen containing corrosion inhibitor (CI) polymerized with sulfur compounds in a vulcanization process. Testing confirmed the role of the CI in creating this fouling.

A sour gas plant was experiencing high corrosion and fouling in aggressive conditions (170 to 195°F, 170 psi pH2S, 280 psi pCO2) including the presence of elemental sulfur (0.1 wt%). The current chemical program appeared to be ineffective.

Corrosion by Elemental Sulphur Deposition in Natural Gas Transmission Systems

The presence of orthorhombic elemental sulfur in a natural gas transmission system was detected. Different dust samples were taken from strainers and skids of a fuel gas turbomachinery. The presence of sulfur could cause corrosion problems and damage to the internal combustion system of a turbine. Characterization analyses were conducted to identify the principles and mechanisms associated with the formation and deposition of elemental sulfur in natural gas transmission and related equipment. Scanning electron microscopy / energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence, and X-ray diffraction were performed. Physicochemical parameters characterization by colorimetric methods on the samples was also done. The results suggest three potential deposition mechanisms: chemical reaction, condensate formation, and desublimation of sulfur. Each mechanism could interact with one or both of the others. This research has demonstrated that only sub-ppm levels of sulfur vapor within a gas stream are required to initiate the elemental sulfur formation/deposition process. However, the sulfur deposition could cause severe corrosion in the presence of free water. Recommendations were made to reduce the effect of the elemental sulfur deposition in the turbomachinery and associated gas natural transmission pipelines.

Production of highly sour oil and gas fields has increased recently, which introduces new challenges for
corrosion control. In recent years, some unexpected and unexplained pipeline failures have occurred,
resulting in complex investigations and laboratory corrosion performance testing studies to assess the
inhibitors that are applied in these environments. While some of these failures are due to cracking in
sour environments which are prevented by alternative material selection or different operation pipeline
maintenance, we were specifically looking at cases where chemical inhibitors could be used to mitigate
corrosion.

Shale gas production is unique and presents challenges in terms of corrosion mitigation and pipeline integrity management. Many of these challenges stem from variations in production modes from the early stages and as the system becomes mature, with many variables involved such as frac flowback, H2S, CO2, iron, microbial, velocities, topography, O2, hydrates, and paraffin. When combined with economic challenges the oil and gas industry faces, these factors force producers to strike a balance between technical decisions and operational/cost efficiencies, which adds complexity to an already difficult-to-manage system. This paper will review a pipeline failure case study from a critical sour shale gas gathering system in Canada. The case study will cover the history of the pipeline from commissioning until failure, challenges faced, root-cause analysis, solutions implemented, and results obtained. The case study will help increase awareness about best practices regarding pipeline pigging, corrosion inhibitor batch treatments, and analytical testing used when conducting failure root cause analysis. It also serves as a documentation for a corrosion failure in a pipeline with a staggering corrosion rate of over 2,800 mpy resulting in a pipeline failure in less than five weeks of operations.
