Corrosion inhibition is a critical barrier in protection against internal corrosion threats of carbon and low alloy steel equipment in the oil and gas environment and as a result inhibition is fundamental to the safe and reliable operation of carbon steel systems.

Across the oil and gas production industry (from operators and producers to suppliers) there is a general belief that properties which are fundamental to the understanding of the performance of corrosion inhibitors - such as partitioning are already fully understood. The reality however is that much of the current understanding is based on oil field ‘lore’ rather than scientific ‘law’. In fact key parameters such as partitioning of corrosion inhibitors (which are essentially surfactants) are often poorly understood by the oil industry at large.
