Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology which involves capturing CO2 and injecting into geological formations is seen as a focus area for reducing CO2 emissions and sustainable future. One of the key challenges for CCS is material selection for construction of wells for injection and storage where the materials can be subjected to a complex environmental mix with various impurities present in the CO2 stream along with different phases within the well. Knowledge and understanding of corrosion and cracking performance of various materials in different environmental conditions relevant to CCS wells can provide a basis for material selection. Being a relatively new field there is an effort to build up knowledge base via testing, characterizing materials suitable for long term well service. In this study, martensitic, supermartensitic and super duplex stainless steels along with Age Hardenable (AH) Nickel Alloy were tested for both corrosion and cracking performance in different CCS type environments. The testing simulated exposure to injected fluid phase, interface between injected fluid and water phase and completely immersed in water phase. The details of testing performed results obtained along with discussions is presented so that it can provide guidance on material compatibility for some of the CCS environments.

The CARMA (Corrosion and Risk Modelling Analytics) project aims to provide improved corrosion prediction capability by using Machine Learning techniques. For the selected system, the initial CARMA model is trained by using a combination of online process monitoring data as the input, combined with online corrosion monitoring data as the output. Once trained and validated, the resulting model can then be used to predict corrosion rates in similar systems or in other parts of the same system, without the need to install corrosion monitoring devices or carry out routine physical inspections at the same frequency as in the past. This paper provides an overview of the model development process for one example system, incorporating data from both online monitoring in the plant and from laboratory experiments.

Corrosion and Scale Formation at Carbon Steel in Sour Aqueous Solution at Elevated Temperature

Films of ion sulfide generally form at carbon steel subjected to sour aqueous solutions. The protective ability of surface films is highly dependent on the conditions during which they were formed. At elevated temperature the possible formation of iron oxides may also become important. In this work the corrosion of UNS K03014 carbon steel has been investigated in autoclave tests in the temperature range 90-150 °C with 10 bar H2S and 10 bar CO2. Average corrosion rates were obtained from the total mass loss, while localized corrosion was evaluated from the surface profile of corrosion coupons. Also, the corrosion products were investigated using X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS).

An overview of various assessment techniques is discussed, including visual assessment as well as more detailed destructive and non-destructive assessment techniques, such as mechanical sounding, half-cell potential surveys, corrosion rate testing, material sampling, and laboratory analyses. Digital data collection techniques and the use of assessment data to develop service life and durability predictions based on the properties gathered by an in-situ assessment are also presented. Based upon the assessment results, the appropriate mitigation strategies can be selected. Several repair and mitigation strategies for reinforced concrete structures are discussed, along with the considerations involved with selecting each system with respect to cost, maintenance, and potential service life implications. Representative case studies will illustrate how these tools have been used for water and wastewater infrastructure.

Additive manufacturing (AM) techniques are being studied widely for producing intricately shaped parts and structural components with superior mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. Several detailed studies have been performed on selective laser melted (SLM) stainless steel 316L (SS316L) alloys which describe the effects of process parameters, anisotropy and heat treatments on the corrosion behavior of these alloys. These studies have revealed various pit morphologies and passive films formed on the alloys in various solutions.

Corrosion and formation of heavy deposit has been observed in firewater piping in carbon steel with stagnant seawater on several offshore platforms. This has resulted in plugging and constrictions in the pipes. Many offshore installations that have been operated for several decades in the North Sea are currently being sent for decommissioning. DNV has received pipe segment from some of these 20 to 40 years old installations for examination of the internal condition. The aim of this investigation is to gain knowledge based on operational experience in the North Sea. Two carbon steel pipes taken from the firewater ringmain on two offshore platforms from the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) were examined. The objective of the investigation was to establish the internal condition, extent and nature of the deposits, determine mass of the deposit related to the observed metal loss and the dominating corrosion mechanism.

In gas-oil separation plants (GOSPs), multiphase crude is separated, degassed and then dehydrated before being shipped to stabilization plants for further processing. The serious challenges for harvesting solar energy from solar power tower is the inherent intermittence caused by altering of day and night and by the weather event changes, posing a significant threat to the continuous supply of solar electricity. The most promising solution explored by the researchers during the last few decades would be integrating the thermal storage system with the Concentrated Solar Power Plant (CSP) to stabilise and provide the high-quality electrical energy at night or anytime without sufficient solar irradiance. Typical thermal energy storage system enables the CSP plants to store solar energy by heating the sensible storage medium, like molten nitrate salt in a hot tank.
