Observation of Flow Dependent Corrosion Rate by Ultrasound Corrosion Monitoring on a Gas Pipeline

This trial demonstrated that ultrasonic monitoring can be applied to detect changes in real-life corrosion rates in a short time (3 weeks). This short feedback time can be used to give advanced warnings on corrosion issues on bends, T-pieces or other areas.

PipeMonit® is an ultrasonic erosion and corrosion monitoring tool which provides real-time and online wall thickness data for onshore and topside piping and pipelines. It is non-invasive and is installed and operated without interfering with production. Pulse-echo ultrasound monitoring provides fast and accurate erosion and corrosion rates making it an effective tool for feedback of corrosion inhibitor programs. A 6 month trial of ultrasonic monitoring has been performed on an 8 inch OD pipeline in a gas plant. The ultrasonic monitoring system recorded measurements 4 times per day. In addition manual Ultrasonic Testing (UT) was performed before and after the trial period. Comparison of the results showed that the manual UT measurements overestimated the corrosion rates by more than 100% compared to ultrasonic monitoring. During the trial period a significant increase of corrosion rate was observed. The increased corrosion was correlated to an increase of the flow rate by a factor of 2 in the same time period. This trial demonstrated that ultrasonic monitoring can be applied to detect changes in real life corrosion rates in a short time (3 weeks). Using the ultrasonic corrosion monitoring will give the operator more accurate life time estimate of the pipe and the possibility to plan for a more accurate maintenance program.
