The sulphide stress cracking resistance of 1.4542 and 1.4418 bars was studied at different pH’s using the NACE Method A. The study showed the very high sensitivity of this parameter on the SSC resistance. Concerning the metallurgy the influence of two parameters on the SSC resistance of the 1.4418 were studied: the hardness and the content of residual austenite. The SSC resistance is discussed in a large range of mechanical properties: from 650 up to about 1000 MPa. Bibliographic research showed that the content of residual austenite seems to influence as well the SSC resistance of martensitics in a positive way. We studied the cracking resistance of 1.4418 with different contents of residual austenite to verify this hypothesis. In order to study the electrochemical behaviour of the 1.4418 the corrosion potentials of the loaded specimen were measured. Furthermore electrochemical experiments in the same media as those tested according the SSC Method were carried out. The tests gave information about the critical current density for passivation and the passivation stage.
