Once polymers are used reliably in a specific service, they become the material of choice due to their cost effectiveness. However, to choose and apply polymers dependably, one must consider their unique properties – they are different from the metals we use industrially. Through various examples of damaged and failed parts, this paper illustrates fundamental information about choosing, using, and keeping polymers in service. Polymers are subject to permeation, oxidation, aging, fatigue, installation damage, and other damage.

When Marsden Point Oil Refinery in New Zealand needed to reline 3 steel crude oil storage tanks, the engineers began a search for a lining with the necessary properties to provide a long-term solution.
Polymeric interior and exterior marine decking systems provide both decorative and functional protection for ships, aircraft carriers, and offshore drilling platforms. Interior decking systems includes coatings, color flake and quartz systems, terrazzo, and underlayments, which are applied in areas such as galleys, living quarters, and wet spaces.
Inorganic scaling and fouling are undesirable processes occurring in process waters that are supersaturated with respect to scaling cations and anions. Mineral scaling is the result of nucleation and crystal growth phenomena that follow predictable pathways. This is because the mineral scales are composed of well-defined crystalline salts, the most common being calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate dehydrate (gypsum), metal sulfides, depending on the particular water chemistry and operational parameters (eg. temperature).
There is evidence of significant physical fouling of crude units from polymerization of MEA triazine scavenger in the presence of hydrogen sulfide. This paper highlights this new impact.
The durability of a coating can be described in a simplified manner as how well it adheres to the substrate and how well it performs over time once exposed to the environment. Oil and gas pipeline coatings need to withstand exposure to both mechanical and chemical forces for long periods of time to extend the life of the pipeline. A new class of 100% solids polyester polyols have been developed which can offer improved performance in urethane coating applications compared to other common protective systems such as epoxies, aspartics and solventborne polyesters
Bridge coatings have evolved significantly over the years, which has led to wide array of coating types for the bridge coatings community to choose from. This paper will briefly discuss the evolution of bridge coatings through time and will also discuss the most current systems deployed in the coating of structural steel bridges. The primary focus of this paper will be centered on one of the newer technologies available, polysiloxane.
Organic modified polysiloxanes are generally recognized as the newest generic class of high-performance protective coating. They have gained commercial acceptance over the last ten years and are now widely used in new construction, heavy duty OEM, marine and industrial maintenance painting. This paper provides an overview of the technology, describes the available types of polysiloxane modified organic coatings and their properties and briefly discusses some recent advances in the field.
The use of an Aromatic Polyurea lining in an effluent wastewater clarifier tank in Idaho in the Spring of 2017. This clarifier is owned by one of the world’s largest privately held companies with a proven track record in the Wastewater Industry. The clarifier is constructed out of carbon steel for the wall sections with about 4,000 square feet (372 square meters) of surface area. The floor of the clarifier is concrete and was not coated during the project as the coating on the concrete floor was still in good overall condition.
Upon installation of a typical thin film coating system, extensive dynamic cracking was discovered in concrete chemical secondary containment structures. After multiple failed attempts to repair cracks using standard coating products, the decision was made to proceed with equipment installation in hopes of maintaining schedule while the coating details could be evaluated.
