Thousands of wells have been drilled and fractured to produce gas from a massive shale field inorganic scale and corrosion have been recognized as the biggest flow assurance challenges due to the massive number of wells with limited water samples delayed water production reports therefore uncertainty of risk severity and inappropriate chemical dosages. Chemical inhibitors have been widely deployed in the field without appropriate optimization which has resulted in chemical consumption being listed as one of the top LOE (Loss Of Expenditure) contributors.A number of initiatives are therefore considered to optimize the inhibitor usage this includes the use of automated pumps study groups and the development of risk evaluation work flow to ensure sufficient chemical is delivered to the high risk wells while not wasting inhibitors in low priority wells. In particular a three step scale risk ranking methodology is developed and verified to predict the severity rank the risks and identify the requirement for chemical treatment.A number of scale prediction tools (ScaleSoftPitzer Multiscale and ScaleChem) and corrosion evaluation tools (iron count equation Norsok M-506 and OLI Corrosion Analyzer) are used to cross compare and validate the accuracy; suitable software tool and water sampling procedure are identified for the field following this cross check analysis.This paper illustrates the scale and corrosion control challenges associated with shale gas development where the massive numbers of wells and variety in risk severity has called a systematic work flow in evaluating the risk and identifying chemical treatment strategy to be developed and utilized across the field. Following this development scale and corrosion risks can be properly assessed and chemical treatment can be properly regulated using the limited resources available to each of the thousands wells in field.
