Failure analysis of localized corrosion in sour environments in discharge lines hydrocarbon wellsIrene Carrillo Gabriela Pedraza Jorge CantóCorrosion y ProteccionSour oil and gas production and transport always imply a risk of material dam age and shutdowns due to CO2/H2S corrosion and especially localized corrosion attacks. Localized corrosion of carbon steel in sour systems has progressively become a greater concern to the oil and gas industry as a result of production from increasingly H2S environments. Increased knowledge of the localized corrosion mechanisms is necessary to develop efficient prediction and mitigation methods .This paper describes a case history of a pipeline failure that resulted in a leak in a line discharge from a hydrocarbon well in an oilfield in south of Mexico. The physicochemical composition of the fluid was carried out “In Situ” by colorimetric techniques. The sample was taken directly from an access nipple on the well. The corroded metal was taken and placed in an inert medium to be taken immediately to the laboratory. Characterization analysis of corrosion products and layer on metal surface were carried out by electronic scanning microscopy coupled to X-ray dispersive energy and X-ray diffraction systems. The microstructure of the corroded metal was analyzed. The morphology attack and the formed layers around the leakwere analized.Themechanism of the effect of H2S correlated with the cut water salts and the operation conditions of the discharge line was proposed. The results indicated that although the metal was subjected to a heat treatment indicated for application in sour media the pipeline suffered localized corrosion at 6 hours position due a water presence salts sands and H2S.Keywords: localized corrosion sour enviroment hydrocarbon well H2S corrosion mechanism.
