Chemical processing environments vary greatly so selection of corrosion-resistant materials is a complex subject. However by following a few simple rules gained from alloy and application experience material selection can be somewhat simplified and the list of potential alloy candidates for a requirement greatly reduced. By understanding the contribution of the various alloying elements in corrosion-resistant alloys and steels the engineer can better focus on materials that may potentially meet the requirements of the application. While the list of corrodents in the CPI is endless many fall into some general categories such as basic acidic oxidizing reducing carburizing or sulfidizing. The alloy selection can then be made based on the inherent resistance of an alloy type or family to each of these environmental conditions.
