Environmental cracking susceptibility of low alloy steel OCTG (T95 C110 and P110) in high H2S partial pressures was investigated by 4 point bend tests in autoclaves. The H2S pressures and testing temperatures were varied from 10 bar – 24oC to 100 bar – 150oC.
Sour grades (T95 and C110) showed no macro-crack in all tested conditions. Small localized corrosion occurred in higher H2S with higher temperature conditions but did not propagate after long term (3 months) immersion tests. It was concluded that the sour grades tested in this research can be used up to 100 bar H2S - 150oC with no environmental cracking.
P110 suffered from SSC below 65oC at 10 bar H2S. The results correspond to the temperature limit of P110 defined in NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-2.
Mechanisms of cracking susceptibility were discussed from the viewpoints of corrosion rates and morphologies of corrosion products on the steel surface.
