As one of the three major types of superalloys cobalt-base alloys have long been served in various industries for high-temperature corrosion and wear applications. In service corrosion occurring in these alloys may evoke a severe issue that essentially brings a careful attention. This paper presents a study of pitting corrosion involving Stellite 6B and Stellite 6K referred to as two comparable alloys performed with specific corrosion tests in Green Death solution which is known as a strong reductive agent and can cause pitting. The Critical Pitting Temperature (CPT) of Stellite 6B and Stellite 6K were initially determined using this solution.

Based on the Gumbel Distribution Theory the block maxima (BM) approach of Extreme Value Analysis (EVA) was primarily applied to pitting corrosion data generated from different laboratory-simulated Stellite alloys. In order to better understand the corrosion pitting of Stellite alloys both Stellite 6B and Stellite 6K specimens were tested under selected concentrations of Green Death solution and different duration schemes. To explore possible correlation between the corrosion and morphologies of Stellite alloys scanning electron microscopy (SEM) will be used to examine the surface topography of the specimens after the corrosion tests and chemical compositions of the pits. The electrochemical behavior and mechanism of these two alloys will also be investigated with the assistance of the adopting potentiodynamic polarization test in NaCl solution at room temperature and the GamryTM PC14TM potentiostat system.
