Effect of Heat Treatment Temperature on the Corrosion Protection Performance of Thermal Sprayed Aluminum Coating

In the present study, thermal effects on the corrosion behavior and corrosion protection performance of TSA coating were investigated using various electrochemical techniques. Heat treatment at higher temperature induces more cracks in the sealer and aluminum coating. Water and corrosive species (e.g., Cl-) penetrate through the cracks, resulting in corrosion of steel substrate.

Heat treatment at higher temperature induces more cracks in the sealer and aluminum coating. Water and corrosive species (e.g., Cl-) penetrate through the cracks, resulting in corrosion of steel substrate. The area of aluminum coating exposed to the solution is also expanded as temperature increases. Because the aluminum coating acts as a sacrificial anode, TSA coating heated at higher temperature shows better corrosion protection performance temporarily. However, considering the many cracks in the aluminum coating, the coating will be peeled off after some period of time and the substrate is predicted to suffer severe corrosion.
