Abstract: The presence of severe corrosive environment along with higher external pressure in Black Sea has led to develop high strength heavy wall line pipe. The paper will cover the successful development of high strength SAWL485 SFDU (33”ODX39.5 mm WT) line pipe manufactured by the JCOE technology. Step wise preventive measures were taken during pipe manufacturing & submerged arc welding processes to control the weld & HAZ hardness which is essential to improve the HIC & SSCC performance of line pipe in severe sour environment. Circumferential residual stress was controlled in order increase the HIC resistance. The welding parameters were closely monitored to obtain higher impact toughness at low temperature in weld and HAZ. The proper selection of wire & flux has resulted average CVN impact > 100 J at -30 °C in weld centerline. The study of weld microstructure showed the co-relation of weld ductility (measured in all-weld specimens) with grain boundary ferrite. The hardness of weld centerline was < 225 HV 10 kg even with overmatching of weld tensile strength.

Plate selection with respect to alloy design and microstructure was critical in obtaining good HIC & SSCC resistance for heavy wall line pipe. Plates were supplied by VoestAlpine Grobblech GmbH Austria. The levels of S<0.0010% & P<0.008% along with low value of (Nb+V+Ti)<0.055% ) Pcm<0.15% and CE<0.38% were obtained in the plates.
