Superaustenitic stainless steels cover grades with high chromium (20 to 27%) high nickel (18 to 25%) and high molybdenum (4 to 6%) contents. 6Mo grades were designed to obtain a good metallurgical stability and enhanced corrosion resistance in aggressive media.

This paper focuses on the investigation of 6Mo high nitrogen grade UNS S31266 in terms of corrosion resistance. Results of corrosion tests performed according to commonly-used standards are reviewed. Electrochemical studies conducted in environments representative of flue gas desulphurization systems and hydrometallurgical plants are also reported. Results reveal that UNS S31266 exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in chloride-containing acidic media indicating that it is a good candidate material for severe conditions encountered in chemical industry.
