Carbon separation technologies known as post-combustion include various processes of which chemical absorption extracts carbon dioxide (CO2) from other combustion gases in amine-based solvents. During the chemical process a number of by-products organic acids and heat-stable amine salts limit absorbent usage and increase corrosion risk. In addition the presence of oxygen and other gaseous contaminants beside CO2 strongly increase corrosion potential in an amine unit.
The corrosion of carbon steel in amine units for gas treatment in gas and power plants steel mills and refineries is a major problem and requires an effective approach to measure predict and mitigate corrosion risk. Typically steel is the metallurgy of choice in carbon dioxide capture units as well as in transportation pipelines and storage locations. Operational controls and chemical solutions support corrosion control in amine-based scrubbing units.
Corrosion inhibitors as chemical solutions could significantly improve the amine unit efficiency and reliability through effective corrosion control. Traditional corrosion inhibitors are found to be less efficient in oxygenated gas systems thus producing rapid and uncontrollable corrosion of equipment. Corrosion abatement through innovative corrosion inhibition is shown to be successful when applied in amine scrubbing units capitalizing on amine unit efficiency and equipment integrity. Several years’ field data are discussed and explained summarizing the past and current amine unit operation.
