Volatile corrosion inhibitors (VCI) are commonly used in various oil systems to prevent corrosion during preservation and in intermittent operation. However water ingress still introduces risk of corrosion when water separates and pools at the bottom of these systems. Traditional corrosion inhibitors used in lubricating oils provide good corrosion protection in the oil-phase but cannot offer protection beneath the oil-water phase line due to their typical hydrophobic nature. It has been determined that the use of proper organic VCIs (which also offer protection in the vapor phase and oil phase) can partition into the water phase and provide additional corrosion protection even in the case of water contamination.

Aboveground storage tanks (ASTs) are assets that contain valuable goods for the oil and gas industry. Consequently, monitoring and preventing loss of containment and extending the service life of those assets is a priority for the abovementioned industries. To monitor the degradation process of the tanks, ER probes are typically used to determine the corrosion rates. Corrosion rates can be used to forecast the service life of an asset by estimating the time at which the degradation reaches a critical thickness of the tank. If the corrosion rate is such that the critical thickness is expected to reach below the expected service life of the asset, the lifespan can be extended by corrosion mitigation methods.

Metallic corrosion is a natural inevitable phenomenon defined commonly as the deterioration of metals due to reactions with their environments. The global cost of corrosion estimated by NACE in 2013 was found to be $2.5 trillion (USD), which is approximately 3.4% of the global gross domestic product (GDP). The two-year global study released at the CORROSION 2016 conference in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, assessed the economics of corrosion and the role of corrosion management in establishing best practices for the different industrial sectors. It found that implementing corrosion prevention best practices could result in global annual savings of 15-35 % of the cost of damage, which is equivalent to $375-875 billion (USD). These estimations excluded the cost of individual safety and environmental consequences from corrosion. Corrosion mitigation has been extensively researched. The methods of corrosion prevention include, but are not limited to, selection of the right material of construction, coatings, corrosion inhibitors, and cathodic protection.1,2
