Corrosion will lead to a change in solution chemistry i.e. ferrous ion concentration and solution pH which will affect the scale formation and corrosion rate. However for an open flow system the solution chemistry including ferrous ion concentration and pH does not change significantly. Therefore it is very important to develop a stable solution chemistry system in lab research to get a better assessment and prediction. In this work a stable solution chemistry system was developed using ion exchange resins. H-form and K-form exchange resins were used to keep pH and ferrous ion concentration constant respectively. Both in glass cell and autoclave tests control loops were built to control the solution pH and ferrous ion concentration automatically. The results show that pH can be controlled automatically with an accuracy of 0.02pH. Ferrous ion concentration also can be kept near zero if the initial ferrous ion concentration is zero. The results of electrochemical measurements and surface analysis indicate that there is a huge difference in either scale formation or corrosion rate between with and without the stable solution chemistry system.
