In recent years the oil production industry has recognised the need to minimise the environmental impact of production chemicals that are used offshore. In response to this need several novel classes of corrosion inhibitor chemistry have been developed that demonstrate more environmentally ftiendly toxicity profiles. Our approach has been to screen potential intermediates derived from a large synthetic programme for both corrosion performance and toxicity to marine organisms using
industry standard protocols. The resultant products show not only improved performance over conventional chemistry, but are less toxic, more easily biodegraded, and are less likely to bioaccumulate.
