The diversity of chemical products which have to be transported by road, by rail or by ship induces the use of specific materials for the tanks and containers. An appropriate corrosion resistance, together with high mechanical properties are necessary conditions to insure the reliability
of the transport, and to limit the risks of pollution and safety problems.
Special stainless steels can provide very interesting improvements in this field. The paper presents a wide range of chemical compositions of highly alloyed stainless steels and their limits of use for some chemical products transportation. The effects of the nature of the corrosive medium, the temperature, the redox conditions, and the presence of residual impurities are discussed. Indeed, all these parameters have to be taken into account for the material selection, since they exert a
significant influence on the behaviour of the containers. Keywords : stainless steels, chemical products, transport
