Round tensile specimens of CRAs [Alloy 904L (UNS N 08904), alloy 28 (UNS N08028), alloy 31 (UNS N08031), alloy 825 (UNS N 08825), alloy 625 (UNS N 06625) and alloy 59 (UNS N 06059) with a weld in the test section were tested for 720 h under 90% of actual yield strength in contact with elemental sulfur (on the whole test section) and fully submerged in oxygen-free brine (partly in the presence of oil-based inhibited sulfur solvent) at 50 and 100°C under highly sour conditions. None of the test specimens suffered from any visual corrosion attack. Corrosion rates calculated from surface related mass losses were in all cases far below 0.1 mm/y. The highest uniform corrosion rates were observed at Alloy 28/UNS N 08028 (0.08 mm/y) and Alloy 31/UNS N08031 (0.04 mm/y) in pure brine at 100°C. In all other corrosion systems the uniform corrosion rates of all alloys ranged below 0.02 mm/y. The paper also discusses basic methodologies of corrosion testing in the presence of elemental sulfur.

Keywords: elemental sulfur, corrosion resistant alloys, hydrogen sulfide, sour gas, brine, inhibitors, tensile testing, corrosion testing
